Northern University was founded in 1996
The University has initially adopted a unique mission to organize higher education of Armenian immigrated youth, from former Soviet Republics, particularly Russia, in the homeland (this is how comes the name ''Northern”).

Northern University first accreditation - N013, has received by RA Ministry of Education and Science, in 2001.
In 2015, the National Center for Professional Education Quality Assurance (ANQA) has granted institutional accreditation for 2 years (conditional).
In 2018, has been re-accredited for a four-year term by the National Center for Professional Education Quality Assurance (ANQA).
The primary purpose of state accreditation is to assure educational institutions, students, families, employers, and interested public that the institution operates with a high level of quality in education and is recognized by the Government. Accreditation is a process by which educational institutions and academic programmes are recognized for their performance, integrity, and quality that entitles them to the confidence of the educational community and the public. Accreditation is granted for a certain period and guarantees that the institution or academic programme has the necessary capacity to provide education for a definite time span. Accreditation entails that the institution maintains the standards that endow its graduates to gain admission to other reputable institutions of higher learning or to achieve credentials for professional practice.
The Northern University provides its students, post-graduate students exclusively state diploma.
The University has a three-cycle system of higher education: Bachelor's degree, Master’s degree and Post-graduate education.
